A March 11, 2006 Washington Post article quoted Michael E. Toner, the chairman of the Federal Election Commission, who predicted the 2008 presidential campaign would require enormous funding to “be taken seriously by the time nominating contests start in early 2008.”

“There is a growing sense that there is going to be a $100 million entry fee at the end of 2007 to be considered a serious candidate,” Toner said in a recent interview.

That idea should horrify Americans who want leadership responsive to their needs. It is abhorrent to spend that kind of money to secure a position that should serve the People and protect their interests. Logic tells rational people that anyone attracting that kind of funding will be beholden to large contributors (read: “lobbyists and special interest groups”). This cannot be in the best interests of the American People.

The Richard Michael Smith for President Campaign offers an alternative to this mindless, reckless spending attempt to purchase the Presidency for special interests. We’re putting together a grass-roots effort to get a message across to “We the People”—real People who have real issues. Richard Michael is a regular, “real” person, just like you.

Now, if you were putting together this campaign, how would you do it? How would you communicate to 300 million Americans? How would you tell your story?

Would you take advantage of the Internet, building a website to share ideas? What about newspaper ads? Radio and TV commercials? You can see the need to gain name recognition and to get the message to the People.

We don’t have millions of dollars available. None of us putting this campaign together have the resources to finance the effort. We believe in America and hold fast to the ideals that the People have established this country. Yet the People are perilously close to losing the personal freedoms this country was founded upon and that the Constitution originally guaranteed.

We’re asking you to share campaign ideas—ways to get our message out. We don’t believe that it’s necessary to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to do that. The People can spread the message and make an impact that will change the face of politics in America. You need to be part of that effort.

We’ve started the web site because over 60 percent of Americans have regular access to this great communications tool. It is the most cost-effective way to reach an audience of Americans both here and abroad. It’s a great vehicle for sharing the message and getting feedback.

Even though this is a very cost-efficient method to share the message, it still requires money. We don’t need or want hundreds of millions of dollars. We reject the idea that the Presidency should be purchased. Instead it must be preserved for the People. Richard Michael will run this campaign the same way he will govern when the People elect him to office—with minimum investment and maximum impact.

You can help. Provide candid feedback. Share ideas and information. Spread the word among family, friends, and acquaintances. Click here for specific ways to support and take action. This is your campaign. Ultimately it’s about YOU and what is best for America. You can make it happen.
